Antarang Foundation is a registered not-for-profit organisation that works with disadvantaged young adults. Through structured interventions, we motivate young people to stay in education until they are 18, after which, we train them in employability skills and place them in careers of their choice. We do this through two career focused programmes CareerAware and CareeReady.
Our CareeReady programme is a career readiness and employability skills training programme for youth in the age group of 18 – 25 years. Our students undergo a well-defined regiment of development and training. The program consists of 5 key aspects spread over different sessions:
- Career awareness
- Work skills
- Work ethics
- Business spoken English
CareeReady groups in the communities are a mix of adolescents with different educational backgrounds – some may be school dropouts, others may be pursuing their 12th or beyond. Different techniques are used to keep the batch engaged given the inconsistent educational backgrounds. Several batches of CareeReady Programme are run simultaneously across multiple locations in Mumbai. Keeping this diversity in mind, facilitators or trainers use a ‘Buddy System’ which enhances learning as well as boosts confidence.
Rather than a one-way dialogue, all concepts are explained with the help of role plays and various activities. Students are also encouraged to work on projects in groups. We support interactive style of learning rather than a lecture/authority style of delivery. We believe in the concept of ‘Do and Learn’ and therefore, we promote self-learning to develop critical thinking skills and retain knowledge that leads to self-actualisation. Trainers also use audio-visual aids as and when required to introduce an element of fun!
What we look for in a trainer is that they should have an understanding of the not-for-profit sector and more importantly, working with the youth. Profiles of the trainers are thoroughly checked against strict criteria of qualification, number of years of work experience in the corporate sector, etc. He/she should be a graduate or above. Trainers must have an interesting personality and the ability to keep a group engaged and interested. We specifically pay attention to the spoken language of the trainer as he/she is required to have good command over languages. If they know a number of languages, it is an added advantage, but Hindi and English are required to be known by all trainers.
Before training students, our trainers are required to undergo training themselves, to understand what we do and the role they will play in working with us. They go through the content of the Facilitator’s Guide or Module, and get tips on handling adolescents. As facilitators or trainers, they also understand the importance of life skills for youth and learn aspects of classroom management as a part of their training. During the training, Facilitators are given opportunities to run mock sessions as they would when they are handling a CareeReady group to prepare themselves. The ‘Training of Trainers’ module is spread across a period of one week, after which they are required to come in every Friday for the next 5 weeks for about 4 hours each day to incorporate the learnings given in the module within them.
If you have the above qualifications and skills and want to improve on them, and at the same time make a difference in this world by helping our students enter the tricky professional world then Antarang is the right place for you.
